Pelvic Anatomy and Neurovascular Structures
The pelvic region encompasses the reproductive organs, urinary bladder, and lower spine. It serves as a passageway for various structures, including the reproductive tract, urinary tract, and nerves.
Reproductive Tract
The reproductive tract includes the male and female reproductive organs. For males, the reproductive organs include the penis, scrotum, seminal vesicles, and prostate gland. For females, the reproductive organs include the uterus, vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
Urinary Tract
The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood and producing urine. The ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The bladder stores urine until it is eliminated from the body. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
Neurovascular Structures
The pelvic region is innervated by the pelvic nerve, which originates from the spinal cord and travels through the pelvis. The pelvic nerve controls the muscles and tissues of the pelvic region, including the reproductive organs, urinary bladder, and lower spine.
Examples
The male reproductive organs are located in the scrotum, which is a pouch of skin and tissue that extends over the abdominal cavity.
The female reproductive organs are located in the pelvic cavity, which is a lower abdominal cavity that is separated from the upper body by the pelvic floor.
The pelvic nerve controls the muscles of the pelvic region, including the penis, scrotum, and prostate gland.
The pelvic vessels are responsible for blood supply to the pelvic organs
