Primary Amines
A primary amine is an amine with a carbon chain containing only one carbon atom bonded to the nitrogen atom. Primary amines can be prepared from alkyl halides by a variety of methods, including the reaction of an alkyl halide with ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. For example, the reaction of methyl chloride with ammonia and hydrogen cyanide produces methyl amine.
Secondary Amines
A secondary amine is an amine with a carbon chain containing two carbon atoms between the nitrogen atom and the carbon chain. Secondary amines can be prepared from primary amines by a variety of methods, including the reaction of a primary amine with phosphorus pentachloride and hydrochloric acid. For example, the reaction of methyl amine with phosphorus pentachloride and hydrochloric acid produces dimethyl amine.
