What are Verbs?
Verbs are the action words of a sentence. They tell us what the subject is doing or what it is being acted upon. Verbs can be simple or compound, and they can be used to express a wide range of emotions and actions.
Simple Verbs
Simple verbs are formed with a base form of the verb plus the suffix -s. For example, the simple verb run is a grammatically correct sentence, as it follows the subject-verb agreement pattern.
Compound Verbs
Compound verbs are formed with two or more simple verbs joined together by a coordinating conjunction. For example, the compound verb run away tells us that Jody is running away from something.
Types of Verbs
There are two main types of verbs: transitive and intransitive. Transitive verbs take a direct object, while intransitive verbs do not.
Transitive Verbs
Transitive verbs describe an action that is performed on an object. For example, the transitive verb eat takes a food object as its direct object.
Intransitive Verbs
Intransitive verbs describe an action that is performed on the speaker or writer. For example, the intransitive verb sleep is performed on the speaker or writer.
