Proper Fractions#

A proper fraction is a fraction that represents a part of a whole that is not zero. A proper fraction can be expressed as a decimal that is between 0 and 1, with the numerator representing the part of the whole and the denominator representing the whole.

For example, the fraction 1/3 represents one part of the whole that is shaded in the figure below:

Proper fractions can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided just like whole numbers. However, unlike whole numbers, proper fractions have different rules when it comes to comparing and ordering them.

Comparing proper fractions

To compare proper fractions, we compare the numerators. The fraction with the larger numerator is considered larger. For example, 1/2 is larger than 1/4 because 2 is larger than 4.

Ordering proper fractions

To order proper fractions, we order the numerators from least to greatest. For example, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 are ordered from least to greatest.
