A breech presentation is a condition in which the baby is born with its buttocks facing the mother's abdomen instead of the pelvis. This means that the baby's head is turned sideways, making it difficult for it to pass through the birth canal.
Causes:
Genetic factors
Malpresentation (when the baby is positioned incorrectly)
Fetal presentation (when the baby is placed sideways)
Clinical Presentation:
The mother may experience pain and pressure in the lower abdomen.
The baby may be breech or transverse (lying sideways).
A large abdomen may be visible.
Diagnosis:
Treatment:
Depending on the cause and severity of the breech presentation, different interventions may be attempted:
Vacuum extraction: The baby may be pulled through the birth canal using a vacuum cup.
Forceps delivery: The doctor uses specialized forceps to manually guide the baby through the birth canal.
Cesarean section: This may be needed if other methods are unsuccessful.
Prognosis:
Breech presentations can be managed with successful labor and delivery.
However, if the baby is too large or positioned incorrectly, or if other complications arise, a cesarean section may be necessary.
Examples:
A breech presentation can be seen in an ultrasound image.
The mother may experience pain and vaginal bleeding during labor.
A breech presentation may be diagnosed during a routine prenatal checkup
