Enteric Fever
Enteric fever is an infection of the digestive tract caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever.
Causes
Bacteria: Most commonly caused by bacteria such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Campylobacter.
Viruses: Less common, caused by viruses such as the norovirus, rotavirus, and adenovirus.
Parasites: Caused by parasites such as Giardia and Trichinella spiralis.
Risk Factors
Age: Most common in children under 5 years old.
Poor nutrition: Weakened immune system.
Diabetes: Impaired blood sugar control.
Abdominal surgery or a colostomy: Increased risk of infection.
Complications
Appendiceal abscess: Inflammation of the appendix, a small organ attached to the large intestine.
Small intestinal obstruction: Blockage of the small intestine, causing diarrhea and malnutrition.
Colitis: Inflammation of the colon.
Sepsis: A life-threatening condition where the body's immune system responds to an infection.
