A thermodynamic system is a specific portion of the universe we choose to study in thermodynamics. It is a well-defined region with constant boundaries, meaning that the system's properties are independent of its surroundings. This allows us to analyze the system and its interactions with the environment.
Thermodynamic systems can be classified based on their characteristics:
Closed systems: These systems have a constant amount of matter, and energy and matter can only enter or leave through the system's boundaries. Examples include a sealed container with a fixed amount of gas, or a perfectly sealed room.
Open systems: These systems have a constant flow of matter and energy, meaning that they can exchange with the environment. Examples include a river flowing into the sea, or a furnace with a constant input of fuel and exhaust.
Isolated systems: These systems are completely separated from the environment, meaning that they have no ability to exchange energy or matter with the outside world. Examples include the interior of a vacuum chamber, or a closed system containing a gas at equilibrium.
Within each system type, there are different classifications based on the properties of the system and its surroundings. For instance, in an open system, we can differentiate between systems based on their temperature, pressure, and flow rate.
