An acceptance angle is a key concept in fiber optics and laser design that determines the maximum angle at which light can be delivered into the fiber core without being reflected back or scattered. It essentially defines the "capture angle" within which light entering the core can be considered part of the effective collection region.
Imagine a light beam approaching the fiber at an angle. The acceptance angle tells us how wide this beam can be and still be captured within the core region. If the beam angle is larger than the acceptance angle, some light will be reflected or escape the core altogether.
Example:
For a single-mode fiber with an acceptance angle of 20°, only light entering the core at an angle less than 20° can be considered within the core.
If the acceptance angle of a fiber is larger than the beam angle of the light source, the light will be scattered and not captured.
