An oil minimum is a specific minimum amount of oil pressure that must be maintained in a switchgear or circuit breaker to ensure proper operation and prevent failure.
Oil pressure is the force exerted by a fluid, measured in pounds per square inch (psi). The minimum oil pressure is typically determined by the manufacturer based on factors such as the switchgear rating, fluid type, and operating conditions.
In simpler terms, it's like setting a minimum water level mark on a container. If the water level falls below that mark, it's considered empty. Similarly, if the oil pressure drops below the minimum level, it can cause a switch or circuit breaker to malfunction or fail.
Examples:
A switchgear rated for 120A with a minimum oil pressure of 10 psi will require a minimum oil pressure of 10 psi to operate properly.
A circuit breaker with a rating of 20A and a minimum oil pressure of 5 psi will not operate correctly with a fluid pressure below 5 psi
