Semi-Laser
A semi-laser is an optical device that can produce and manipulate light with some properties of both lasers and conventional light sources. It is an intermediate between a laser and a conventional light source, and can be used to achieve specific light amplification and emission characteristics.
Semi-lasers are typically created by using a nonlinear crystal, such as lithium niobate, where the population inversion is stimulated by an external electrical field. The nonlinear crystal changes the refractive index of the crystal in response to the applied electric field, allowing light to be amplified.
There are two main types of semi-lasers: stimulated emission pumping (SEP) and stimulated absorption pumping (SAP). In an SEP-based semi-laser, an external pump beam is used to excite the atoms in the crystal, which then emit light. In a SAP-based semi-laser, light is absorbed from the pump beam by the atoms in the crystal, which then re-emit it.
Semi-lasers find applications in various fields, including optical communications, sensing, and medical imaging. By manipulating the properties of the crystal, scientists can control the emission characteristics of the light emitted by a semi-laser
