A wattmeter is a device used to measure power. It is an essential tool for electricians, engineers, and anyone else working with electrical circuits.
There are two main types of wattmeter errors: Absolute error and Relative error.
Absolute error:
This is the difference between the actual power consumption and the reading displayed by the wattmeter.
It is usually expressed in percentage and is indicated by an error code displayed next to the reading.
For example, an error code of "E" might mean there is an absolute error of 10%.
Relative error:
This is the difference between the actual power consumption and the ideal power consumption for the connected device.
It is typically expressed as a percentage and is indicated by a "±" symbol along with the reading.
For example, a reading of 100 W with a "±5%" symbol means the actual power consumption is between 95 W and 105 W.
Causes of wattmeter errors:
Calibration errors: Wattmeters are manufactured to be accurate, but they can be affected by factors such as temperature, humidity, and the presence of interferences like electromagnetic interference.
Load conditions: The accuracy of a wattmeter can also be affected by the load connected to it. For example, a wattmeter might be less accurate when measuring power in a circuit with a significant amount of resistance.
Instrument limitations: Wattmeters have a limited ability to measure certain power values. For example, they may not be able to measure power in inductive loads, such as motors.
How to minimize wattmeter errors:
Use a wattmeter that is calibrated for the type of load you are measuring.
Take multiple measurements and average them to get a more accurate reading.
Keep the wattmeter away from electromagnetic interference.
