What is a Schering Bridge?
A Schering bridge is a type of voltage divider circuit used in electrical measurements to isolate and analyze signals from a source while bypassing or attenuating any unwanted signals or noise.
How does it work?
A Schering bridge works by using a specific configuration of resistors to divide the input signal into three separate paths:
Primary path: The input signal is applied to the junction between two resistors.
Secondary path: A reference voltage is applied to the junction between the two other resistors.
Terminated path: The output signal is taken from the junction between the two resistors that are connected to the source.
Why is it used?
The Schering bridge is used in various electrical measurements, including:
Measuring source impedance: By measuring the input and output resistance, we can calculate the source impedance.
Identifying short circuits: By injecting a known current into the source and measuring the output voltage, we can identify short circuits.
Analyzing filters: By measuring the transfer function of a filter, we can determine its order and resonant frequency.
Examples:
Measuring Source Impedance:
Connect a source resistor (R1) across the junction between two resistors.
Measure the voltage across the junction between the two resistors.
The output voltage will be proportional to the source resistance.
By analyzing the output voltage, we can calculate the source impedance.
Identifying Short Circuits:
Inject a known current (I) into the source.
Measure the output voltage.
If the output voltage is close to zero, it indicates a short circuit.
By analyzing the output voltage and current, we can identify the short circuit location.
Analyzing Filters:
Build a filter circuit using a Schering bridge.
Measure the frequency response of the filter.
By analyzing the frequency response, we can determine the filter order, cutoff frequency, and resonant frequency
