Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure to create an opening in the throat or mouth to allow a patient to breathe through an alternative route, such as a respirator or a tracheostomy tube. It is indicated for patients who have severe burns or trauma that have resulted in significant damage to the mouth and throat, or for patients who have a medical condition that makes it difficult for them to breathe through their nose or mouth.
Indications for tracheostomy include:

Severe medical conditions that make it difficult to breathe through the nose or mouth, such as nasal septums, tumors, or cystic fibrosis.
Patients with tracheal abnormalities, such as tracheomalacia or tracheitis.
Patients who are unable to tolerate nasal cannulas or other respiratory aids.
Patients who are unable to speak or swallow due to severe burns or trauma.
Patients who have a persistent nasal drip or other airway obstruction.
Patients who are receiving radiation therapy to the head and neck
