Plant Tissues
Plant tissues are specialized structures that transport materials throughout the plant. They are composed of different types of cells with specific functions. There are three main types of tissues in plants: xylem, phloem, and parenchyma.
Xylem Tissue:
Xylem tissue is responsible for transporting water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. Xylem cells are long and hollow, with a large central cavity that contains water and dissolved minerals. Xylem vessels are found in the stems and roots and are responsible for carrying water from the roots to the leaves.
Phloem Tissue:
Phloem tissue is responsible for transporting sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Phloem cells are long and specialized with a large central vacuole that contains a gel-like substance called phloem sap. Phloem transport is driven by the concentration gradient of dissolved sugars, which creates a force that pushes the sugar molecules down the length of the phloem.
Parchyma Tissue:
Parchyma tissue is responsible for providing support and protection for the plant. It is composed of unspecialized cells with thick and sturdy cell walls. Paramymatous cells are found in the stems, leaves, and roots and provide strength and rigidity to the plant. They are also involved in mechanical defense, as they can help to repair wounds and protect the plant from pathogens
