The Battle of Plassey was a major naval battle fought in 1781 between the Royal Navy and the French Navy. The battle took place off the coast of the French city of Nice and resulted in a decisive British victory.
The battle began when the British squadron led by Admiral Horatio Nelson intercepted a French squadron sailing from Brest to Nice. The French fleet consisted of 42 ships, including 38 sail ships and four armed ships. In contrast, the British squadron consisted of 34 ships, including 24 sail ships and 10 armed ships.
The battle began with a British squadron raid on one of the French ships. This initial success encouraged other British ships to join the fray. The British admiral, Nelson, skillfully maneuvered his ships to disrupt the French formation and then unleashed his full force.
The British victory at Plassey marked a turning point in the war. The battle weakened the French Navy and opened up opportunities for the British to expand their naval dominance in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Battle of Plassey also had a wider geopolitical impact. It solidified British dominance over the Mediterranean Sea and prevented the French from regaining their former naval power in the region
