Photosynthesis is a biological process that takes place in plants and other photosynthetic organisms, such as algae and certain bacteria. This process allows these organisms to convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy in the form of sugar molecules. These sugar molecules are used by the organisms to create energy and build new cellular structures.

Photosynthesis takes place in two stages: the light-dependent reactions and the light-independent reactions.
The Light Dependent Reactions
The light-dependent reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are pigment-containing organelles found in plant cells. The thylakoid membranes contain protein complexes called photosystems. These complexes use light energy to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen atoms are used to combine with carbon dioxide to form glucose, a sugar molecule that plants use for energy. The oxygen atoms are released into the atmosphere.
The Light Independent Reactions
The light-independent reactions take place in the stroma of chloroplasts. The stroma is a large central compartment of the chloroplast that contains a series of enzyme-containing complexes called ATP synthase and NADPH synthase. ATP synthase uses energy from the splitting of water molecules to pump protons across the thylakoid membrane. This creates a proton gradient, which is a difference in concentration of protons across the membrane. NADPH synthase uses the proton gradient to convert carbon dioxide into glucose.
