What is a magnet?
A magnet is a material that attracts certain metals, such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. These metals are called ferromagnets. Materials that are not ferromagnets are called paramagnets.
What makes a magnet work?
The core of a magnet is made of a metal called ferromagnetic alloy. This alloy is made of iron, nickel, and cobalt. When a magnet is placed near a ferromagnet, the magnetic field of the magnet interacts with the magnetic field of the ferromagnet. This interaction causes the ferromagnet to become magnetized and attract the magnet.
How to make your own magnet:
Collect a piece of iron wire about 12 inches long.
Cut the wire into two pieces, each about 6 inches long.
Attach one piece of wire to the other piece of wire with a piece of string or a twist tie.
Wrap the string or twist tie around the wire once or twice.
Hold the magnet near the wire and observe the wire moving towards the magnet.
Repeat steps 2-5 with the other piece of wire.
You should have two magnets that are attracted to each other.
What can you do with your magnets?
You can use your magnets to pick up small objects, such as buttons, coins, and paper clips. You can also use them to create a magnet board, which is a magnetic board that can hold magnets in place
