Corrosion is the gradual deterioration of a material due to environmental factors, such as water, oxygen, and temperature changes. This deterioration can occur on both metallic and non-metallic objects.
Examples:
Metals: When exposed to water, iron corrodes to form iron oxide, a rust-colored layer. This is why iron nails rust when left in water.
Non-metals: When exposed to air, aluminum reacts with oxygen to form aluminum oxide, a white, protective layer. This is the reason why aluminum foil rusts when exposed to water.
Corrosion can be prevented by taking several steps, such as using protective coatings, or by removing the material from contact with the corrosive agent
