This report explores how to calculate the profit or loss associated with cost of production (CP) and selling price (SP) in basic cases.
Cost of Production (CP):
CP is the total cost incurred to produce a good or service. It can be calculated by adding the costs of materials, labor, and other expenses involved in creating the product.
Selling Price (SP):
SP is the total revenue received from selling the finished good or service. It can be calculated by multiplying the quantity sold by the price per unit.
Profit:
Profit is the difference between the CP and the SP. It is expressed as a percentage of the CP.
Loss:
Loss is when the SP is lower than the CP. It is also expressed as a percentage of the CP.
Calculating the Profit or Loss:
The following formula can be used to calculate the profit or loss for a single unit:
Profit/Loss = SP - CP
Similarly, the following formula can be used to calculate the overall profit or loss for a batch of units:
Total Profit/Loss = (CP x Q) - (SP x Q)
where:
CP: Cost of production
SP: Selling price
Q: Number of units produced and sold
Example 1:
Suppose the cost of producing a unit is 10 and the selling price is 15. The profit is:
Profit = 15 - 10 = 5
Example 2:
Suppose the cost of producing a unit is 20 and the selling price is 25. The loss is:
Loss = 25 - 20 = 5
Example 3:
Suppose the cost of producing a unit is 30 and the selling price is 35. The profit is:
Profit = 35 - 30 = 5
Practice:
Calculate the profit or loss for a batch of 100 units produced for 12 euros each, with the cost price being 10 euros per unit.
Calculate the overall profit or loss for 50 units of a product that cost 20 euros each and are sold for 25 euros each
