Identifying the Figure that Fits the Hollow Space
Concept:
Imagine a large, empty space, like a field or a room. If you were to draw a circle inside the space, what shape would it be? Depending on the size and position of the circle, it could fit perfectly within the larger space, or it could be completely outside.
Activity:
Observe a hollow shape. Look at an object that is hollow, like a ball, a shoe box, or a pond.
Draw a circle around the shape. Use a pencil to draw a circle with the same size and shape as the hollow shape.
Place the circle inside the hollow shape. Make sure the circle completely fills the space inside.
Look around the shape. Try to find an object that fits inside the circle. What do you notice?
Think about what you learned. Based on your observations, how can you tell which object fits the hollow space?
Tips:
Pay attention to the size and shape of the object.
Use your imagination to visualize the object fitting inside the space.
Experiment with different shapes of circles to see what fits best.
Examples:
A round coin fits perfectly inside a circular hole in a piece of paper.
A ball can fit inside a sphere, and a sphere can fit inside a cylinder.
A square fits inside a rectangular space, but not inside a circular space
