A scalar is a single number that represents the magnitude of a vector. In other words, a scalar tells us how "big" a vector is, but it does not tell us in which direction it is pointing.
Examples:
Vector: The vector [3, 4] represents the displacement from point A to point B. Its magnitude is 5 and its direction is along the positive x-axis.
Scalar: The scalar 10 represents the length of the vector from point A to point B.
