An electrochemical cell is a device that enables the flow of electrons from one electrode to another in a chemical reaction. This process, known as redox (reduction-oxidation), produces or consumes electricity, resulting in a measurable change in the cell's potential.
An electrochemical cell consists of two electrodes, typically made of metals with different valences (electron configurations). When a cell is connected to a power source, the two electrodes are connected to different terminals of the source. Electrons flow from the anode (positive terminal) to the cathode (negative terminal) through an external circuit.
During the reduction process at the cathode, electrons gain energy from the external circuit, reducing the atoms or ions in the cathode to a more stable state. Simultaneously, oxidation occurs at the anode, where atoms or ions lose electrons, becoming positively charged ions.
Electrochemical cells can be classified into two main types: voltaic and non-voltaic. In voltaic cells, spontaneous redox reactions occur without the need for an external potential, while in non-voltaic cells, a potential is applied to facilitate the redox reaction.
For example, when copper and silver ions are placed in a solution of hydrochloric acid, an electrochemical cell is formed. Electrons flow from the copper to the silver through an external circuit, resulting in the deposition of silver on the cathode and the oxidation of copper ions to copper(I) on the anode.
