Composition of Blood and Lymph
Blood and lymph are complex fluid systems that constitute the circulatory and lymphatic systems of the human body. Blood comprises a network of vessels carrying oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products from the body to various tissues and organs. Lymph, on the other hand, is a network of vessels that carry fluid, waste products, and immune cells from tissues and organs back to the bloodstream.
Blood Composition:
Blood is composed of about 55% water, 45% blood plasma, and various cellular components.
Blood plasma contains water, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate), proteins, hormones (like insulin and cortisol), and waste products.
The red blood cells carry oxygen, the white blood cells fight infection, and the plasma transports nutrients and hormones.
Lymph Composition:
Lymph is composed of fluid, proteins, and cellular components.
Lymph nodes contain lymph vessels, which are responsible for filtering and defending the body against infections.
Lymph also helps in the transportation of nutrients and waste products back to the bloodstream.
Interactions Between Blood and Lymph:
Blood and lymph are constantly interacting with each other.
Blood returns deoxygenated and waste products to the lungs through the pulmonary artery.
The lungs then transport oxygenated blood to the rest of the body through the systemic arteries.
Lymph carries oxygenated blood back to the heart, where it is pumped to the rest of the body.
Waste products, such as carbon dioxide, are transported from tissues to the lungs by the lymph.
The lymph nodes play a crucial role in filtering and clearing these waste products from the blood
