Concept of Latitudes and Longitudes
A latitude is a measure of the angular distance north or south of the Equator. It is measured in degrees, and is generally expressed as a positive value for locations north of the Equator and a negative value for locations south of the Equator.
A longitude is a measure of the angular distance east or west of the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude). It is also measured in degrees, and is generally expressed as a positive value for locations west of the Prime Meridian and a negative value for locations east of the Prime Meridian.
The Equator divides the Earth into two halves, one hemisphere, which is above the Equator, and the other hemisphere, which is below the Equator. The Prime Meridian is a line that runs from north pole to south pole, passing through the Prime Meridian at 0 degrees longitude.
The North Pole is located at 90 degrees north latitude, and the South Pole is located at 90 degrees south latitude.
Examples:
The Equator is located at 0 degrees latitude, while the Prime Meridian is located at 0 degrees longitude.
The North Pole is located at 90 degrees north latitude, while the South Pole is located at 90 degrees south latitude.
The Western Hemisphere encompasses all the points east of the Prime Meridian, while the Eastern Hemisphere encompasses all the points west of the Prime Meridian.
The Latitude of a location can change depending on its position in the world, while the Longitude remains constant.
The Longitudes of locations are independent of each other, meaning they do not change with the distance from the Prime Meridian
