A parallel line is a line that does not intersect another line. We can construct a parallel line to another line by using a compass and a ruler.
Steps:
Choose two points on the original line.
Place the compass on one of the points and set the compass angle to the other point.
Draw a line from the compass point through the chosen point.
Extend the line until it intersects the original line.
Mark the point where the two lines intersect as the new point on the original line.
Draw a line from the original point to the new point. This line is now parallel to the original line.
Example:
Let's say we choose points A(2, 4) and B(6, 8).
Steps:
Place the compass on point A and set the angle to point B.
Draw a line from A to B.
Extend the line from A to the point where it intersects the line from B.
Mark the point where the two lines intersect as point C.
Draw a line from point A to point C. This line is now parallel to the line from B to A.
Additional Notes:
The distance from point A to point C is the same as the distance from point B to point C.
A line segment perpendicular to the original line is parallel to the original line.
