An atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains all the chemical properties of a substance. It is the building block of all matter, from the smallest molecules to the largest stars.
Atoms are made up of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. The number of protons in an atom determines what element it is, while the number of neutrons and electrons can vary. These particles are arranged in a nucleus at the center of the atom, with electrons orbiting around the nucleus.
The nucleus contains protons and neutrons, and electrons are negatively charged particles. The mass of an atom is mostly due to the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. The electrons have much less mass and are therefore very small compared to the other particles.
