An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances through chemical reactions. Elements are represented by the symbols of their elements, which are one or two letters. For example, the element sodium (Na) is represented by the symbol Na, while the element gold (Au) is represented by the symbol Au.
Elements are classified into groups based on their properties and chemical behavior. These groups are numbered from 1 to 18, with the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, lanthanides, actinides, and halogens in the first group; the noble gases in the second group; and the metalloids in the third and fourth groups.
Elements can exhibit various chemical properties depending on their atomic number and electronic configuration. The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. The electronic configuration of an element describes the arrangement of electrons in the atom. Elements with similar chemical properties tend to exhibit similar chemical behavior.
