The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Indian Parliament. It is composed of 543 members, elected indirectly by the state legislatures on the basis of population. The term of office is 5 years, and one-third of the Rajya Sabha members are elected every year through a secret ballot.

The total number of members is 543.
One-third of the Rajya Sabha members are elected every year through a secret ballot.
The remaining two-thirds of the Rajya Sabha members are elected by the state legislatures in direct elections.
Qualifications
To be eligible for election to the Rajya Sabha, a person must be a citizen of India and must be at least 21 years old.
The person must also be a resident of the state from which he or she is elected.
In addition, the person must be a naturalised citizen of India.
The qualifications for election to the Rajya Sabha are the same as the qualifications for election to the Lok Sabha
