Synapse and Neurotransmitters
A synapse is a junction between two neurons, where communication takes place. It is responsible for the transfer of information from one neuron to another. The two neurons are connected by a structure called a synaptic cleft, which contains neurotransmitters.
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that are released by the presynaptic neuron and travel across the synaptic cleft to the postsynaptic neuron. They bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, which then changes the electrical activity of the postsynaptic neuron.
The process of synaptic transmission can be divided into two main steps:
Exocytosis: The presynaptic neuron releases neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft.
Reuptake: The neurotransmitters are then taken back up by the presynaptic neuron.
