The cycle begins with the intake stroke, during which the piston moves down, drawing a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinder. As the piston rises during the compression stroke, the fuel and air are compressed, raising the temperature and pressure of the mixture.
In the power stroke, the piston moves up, igniting the compressed mixture with a spark plug, which causes a chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of steam. The hot exhaust from the combustion cycle then expands through the exhaust port, driving the piston down during the exhaust stroke.
