Mass Moment
The mass moment is a measure of the resistance of an object to angular acceleration about an axis of rotation. It is defined as the sum of the products of each mass element's position vector (from the axis of rotation to the element's location) squared and its mass.
Formally:
where:
I is the mass moment
m_i is the mass of the i-th particle
r_i is the position vector of the i-th particle from the axis of rotation
Examples:
A point mass has a constant mass moment, regardless of its location.
A rigid body with a uniform distribution of mass has a constant mass moment, regardless of its shape.
A solid sphere has a constant mass moment if its center of mass is located at its geometric center
