Nervous System and Synaptic Transmission

Synaptic Transmission
Synaptic transmission involves the release of neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers, from the presynaptic neuron into the synaptic cleft, which is the space between the pre- and postsynaptic neurons. Neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, which either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron, depending on the type of neurotransmitter.
There are two main types of synaptic transmission:
