Nutritional Science and Balanced Diet Components
Nutritional science is the study of the essential nutrients that the body needs to function properly. These nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. A balanced diet is one that provides all of the essential nutrients in the right amounts.
Balanced diet components include:
Carbohydrates: Provide energy for the body's cells. Good sources include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Proteins: Build and repair tissues, produce enzymes, and help to absorb vitamins. Good sources include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, legumes, and nuts.
Fats: Help to absorb vitamins, provide insulation, and reduce the absorption of toxins. Good sources include olive oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds.
Vitamins: Are substances that the body cannot make on its own. Good sources include vitamins A, C, E, and K.
Minerals: Are substances that the body needs in smaller amounts than vitamins. Good sources include calcium, phosphorus, iron, and magnesium.
A balanced diet should provide the body with all of the nutrients it needs to function properly. If you are not eating a balanced diet, you may become deficient in nutrients, which can lead to a number of health problems
