A sequence of tenses refers to the order in which verbs and other grammatical elements are used in a sentence. Mastering the sequence of tenses allows you to express different time perspectives and relationships between events.
Simple tenses:
Past: We used to go to the movies together.
Present: We go to the movies together.
Future: We will go to the movies together.
Conditionals:
Past conditional: If I had known you were coming, we would have gone to the concert.
Present conditional: If it were raining today, we wouldn't be going for a walk.
Future conditional: If I win the lottery, I will travel the world.
Using sequences and conditionals:
When you are at the airport, you can check in and collect your boarding pass.
If you were late yesterday, you could have attended the meeting.
I know you were feeling nervous, so I gave you some calming words.
Remember:
The sequence of tenses follows the order: past, present, and future.
Conditionals express hypothetical situations, past hypothetical, and future hypothetical.
Both sequences and conditionals require using the past tense and the conditional tenses
