Percentage is a way of expressing a part of a whole in terms of a hundredth. It is often used to compare or calculate the relative size of two quantities.
Basic calculation:
Percentage increase/decrease: To increase a number by a percentage, we add the percentage to 100. For example, if the number is 50 and we increase it by 10%, it becomes 60.
Percentage decrease: To decrease a number by a percentage, we subtract the percentage from 100. For example, if the number is 75 and we decrease it by 5%, it becomes 70.
Changes on sum:
When we add two percentages, we add them together. For example, if we have 30% and 25%, adding them together gives us 55%.
Similarly, when we subtract two percentages, we subtract them from each other. For example, if we have 40% and 35%, subtracting them gives us 5%.
We can also subtract a percentage from a number and then add another percentage to the result. For example, if we have 60% and we subtract 10%, we are left with 50%. Then, adding 25% to 50% gives us 75%.
Remember:
Percentages are expressed as a fraction of 100 (e.g., 50% = 50/100).
The percentage symbol (%) is often used to indicate a percentage.
It is easier to calculate the percentage of a number by using the formula: Percentage = (Part/Whole) x 100%.
We can also express percentages as decimals by dividing the percentage by 100
