There are two main types of year-on-year growth calculations:
Percentage change: This calculation compares the values of a variable or measure at two different points in time and expresses the difference as a percentage. For example, if the value of a variable increased from 10 to 12 in a year, the percentage of change would be (12 - 10) / 10 = 20%.
Absolute change: This calculation provides the actual difference between two values or measures at different points in time. For instance, if the value of a variable increased from 5 to 8 in a year, the absolute change would be 3.
To calculate the year-on-year growth percentage using a bar or line chart:
Identify the data points for two different time periods. These could be represented by different bars on the bar chart or different line segments on the line chart.
Measure the difference between the values of the two data points. This is the change in the variable or measure.
Calculate the percentage of change by dividing the difference by the original value and multiplying by 100. This gives you the year-on-year growth percentage.
For example:
If the bar representing the initial value is 10 units and the bar representing the final value is 15 units, the change is 5 units.
If the initial value was 50 and the final value was 60, the absolute change is 10.
Dividing 5 by 50 and multiplying by 100 gives a year-on-year growth percentage of 10%.
